چکیده
Motivated b y reliability considerations i n data deduplication for s torage s ystems, w e introduce the problem of flexible coloring. Given a hypergraph H and the number of allowable colors k, a exible coloring o f H is a n assignment o f o ne or more colors to each vertex s uch that, for each hyperedge, i t is possible to choose a color from each vertex's color list so that this hyperedge i s strongly colored (i.e., each vertex has a different color). Different colors for the same vertex can be chosen for di fferent i ncident hyperedges ( hence the term flexible). The goal is to minimize color consumption, namely, the total number of colors assigned, counting multiplicities. Flexible coloring is N P-hard and trivially approximable, w here s is t he size o f t he l argest hyperedge, and n is the number of vertices. Using a recent result by Bansal and K hot, we show that if k is constant, then it is UGC-hard to approximate to within a factor of s ɛ, for arbitrarily small constant ɛ > 0. Lastly, we present an algorithm with an approximation ratio, where k' is number of colors used by a strong coloring algorithm for H. Wavelength Assignment in Optical Network Design
We consider a flexible greedy approach to wavelength assignment in an optical network with the goal of minimizing the cost incurred by wavelength conversions and fiber deployment. The greedy approach processes demands one by one in a certain order and makes a locally optimal choice for each demand. We address several heuristics for creating desirable demand orderings, including a random orderin...
متن کاملA practical algorithm for [r, s, t]-coloring of graph
Coloring graphs is one of important and frequently used topics in diverse sciences. In the majority of the articles, it is intended to find a proper bound for vertex coloring, edge coloring or total coloring in the graph. Although it is important to find a proper algorithm for graph coloring, it is hard and time-consuming too. In this paper, a new algorithm for vertex coloring, edge coloring an...
متن کاملReduction of 4-methylimidazole in caramel coloring by ɣ-irradiation
4-Methylimidazole (4-MEI) is a simple nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound, and recently classified as group 2B by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Caramel coloring is widely applied food coloring in many food products including coffee, carbonated beverages, beer and wine. In present study, ɣ-irradiation was applied to Caramel Color III to reduce the level of 4-MEI witho...
متن کاملPeacock Bundles: Bundle Coloring for Graphs with Globality-Locality Trade-Off
Bundling of graph edges (node-to-node connections) is a common technique to enhance visibility of overall trends in the edge structure of a large graph layout, and a large variety of bundling algorithms have been proposed. However, with strong bundling, it becomes hard to identify origins and destinations of individual edges. We propose a solution: we optimize edge coloring to differentiate bun...

Let KN denote the complete graph on N vertices with vertex set V = V (KN ) and edge set E = E(KN ). For x, y ∈ V , let xy denote the edge between the two vertices x and y. Let L be any finite set and M ⊆ L3. Let c : E → L. Let [n] denote the integer set {1, 2, . . . , n}. For x, y, z ∈ V , let c(xyz) denote the ordered triple (c(xy), c(yz), c(xz)). We say that c is good with respect to M if the...
